What I Do

I’m a journalist and critic, specializing in arts and entertainment. I’m also an experienced editor, producer, and host who’s worked in podcasting, radio, and live events.

As a reporter, I handle everything from briefs to features to obituaries. Reporting is the core of my current full-time job at the Duluth News Tribune, where I produce an average of one reported story every day or two. I’ve also reported for magazines and online publications, including extensive work for the website of a public radio music station.

As a critic, I’ve covered every medium. My most extensive experience is in theater criticism: for four years I was the principal critic for a Minneapolis alt-weekly, covering one to three shows per week. I’ve also published professional criticism of music, visual art, books, movies, and television.

As an essayist, I write a weekly column for the Duluth News Tribune: Front Row Seat, which generally focuses on arts and entertainment but varies in content from personal reflections to criticism to reporting. I’ve also written over 1,200 posts for The Tangential, many of them essays or humor pieces.

As an editor, I’ve worked extensively with dozens of writers and multiple content teams. I’m particularly experienced in working with developing writers, which was central to my jobs at both The Current and the Twin Cities Daily Planet.

As a host, I was on the air weekly, sometimes more often, for over four years on The Current. I also co-hosted two podcasts and a video series, and regularly appeared live for Instagram interviews and in-person events. I now appear regularly on the Duluth News Tribune’s podcasts.

As a scholar, I maintained an active sociological research agenda for a decade. I focused on the sociology of culture, childhood, and education. With colleagues, I published a book and multiple peer-reviewed papers. I’m also the author of both editions of Sociology for Dummies.

As an educator, I’ve worked with all ages — from preschoolers to seniors. I studied education in college and graduate school, receiving a B.S. in early childhood education (Boston University) and an Ed.M. in human development and psychology (Harvard Graduate School of Education).

As an influencer — a nanoinfluencer, perhaps — I maintain promotional relationships with Random House and Penguin Random House Audio.
