Author: Jay

I'm a writer and editor living in Duluth, Minnesota, where I write about arts and entertainment for the Duluth News Tribune. From 2013 to 2022, I was a digital producer at Minnesota Public Radio's The Current, where among other projects I hosted/wrote our Rock and Roll Book Club feature. I'm also a co-founder of The Tangential, a member of the National Book Critics Circle, and an alumnus of the National Critics Institute. Recent books I've written or co-written include Sociology for Dummies (second edition, 2021), Robots and Foundation (2020), and Wildsam Field Guides: Twin Cities (2020). I'm on Twitter, Facebook, Goodreads, Tumblr, Instagram, TikTok, and Letterboxd. Gmail: jaygabler. (Photo by Emmet Kowler)

Essays

I appreciate how open-ended the essay format is, particularly in an online era.

Max Morath has been loyal to the @mets since they Max Morath has been loyal to the @mets since they were founded in 1962. Max had just moved to the New York area, from his home state of Colorado, after his proto-PBS series “The Ragtime Era” made him a national celebrity. His friends included Eubie Blake, Irving Berlin, and Walter Cronkite. Dinah Shore and Arthur Godfrey loved having him as a guest. Al Hirschfeld drew his caricature. Max was invited to LBJ’s White House for the signing of the Public Broadcasting Act. He’s written dozens of songs and released over 40 albums, and he recorded a jingle for Beech-Nut Peppermint Gum. His retirement destination, where he now lives at age 96? Duluth. My profile is up now at @duluthnews.
